Taishan Croquettes and Dan Dan Mian at Wusong Road

Wusong Road, a tiki bar a block away from Havard Square, specializes in bites and beverages in a uniquely themed decor of tropical and Chinese influence. Decidedly more Chinese than tropical, the cuisine yields modern, refined, and reimagined Sichuan dishes with a New England twist. Unfortunately, the brunch was replaced by their lunch and dinner menu. Had I been there a week earlier, I could have tasted it… In any case, the atmosphere alone is worth the price of admission!

After crossing a tropical forest concealing statues of divinity, we accessed the restaurant located behind a dragon’s head. There, the interior design, complex but stylish, blended the rustic charm of bricks and wood with the more rudimentary and breezier hut-like elements of bamboo and straw. Furthermore, the presence of spherical glass lanterns helped unify all those unorthodox decoration choices. As for the food, it mirrored this daring, refined, and intricate trend. For example, the Taishan Croquettes, based on crispy cauliflower, tamarind, besan, and Sichuan spice thrilled our taste buds. The same applied to the Dan Dan Mian, a noodle dish with black sesame, pork ragout, peanuts, and smoked mushrooms.

Coconut Bread Pudding at Wusong Road

In brief, dining at Wusong Road is a journey for the senses, resulting in a feast for the eyes and the palate. Both the decor and food deliver a tasteful but peculiar experience without exuding the gimmicky and overly quirky vibe of a cheap Las Vegas hotel. The dishes convey a combination of flavorful, piquant, unique, and contrasted flavors. Now, if only they could bring back their brunch menu…!
