Shakshouka at Cafe Weekend

Cafe Weekend, a little spot located in Allston, serves breakfast/lunch until 10 p.m. Its unobtrusive facade is overshadowed by next-door restaurants displaying enticing pictures of their food and, even sometimes, the meal itself behind their window. Hence, at the sight of such an ostentatious demonstration, one can easily overlook the existence of the small establishment. However, Cafe Weekend doesn’t need to resort to extravagant marketing ploys as its flavorful concoctions along with its well-established reputation among the locals speak for themselves.

As seen with the restaurant’s exterior, simplicity prevails and even extends to the inside of the plate. This straightforward approach yields affordable and highly satisfying comfort food. For instance, the Shakshouka, copiously served and incorporating fresh meatballs, homemade tomato sauce, feta cheese, and eggs enticed my tastebuds. The Figs-Prosciutto Panini, lighter but equally as exquisite, brought about a refined contrast of sweet and salty flavors thanks to the fig jam, brie, Fontina cheese, and prosciutto. Finally, the Blueberry Cream cheese croffle retained the consistency and shape of a waffle with the taste of a croissant: the best of both worlds! Of course, the blueberry and cream cheese on top imparted an extra touch of sweetness and smoothness.

In brief, Cafe Weekend, rather prosaic in its apparence, in my opinion, surpasses many popular restaurants striving for uniqueness but ending up serving meals that are just gimmicky and overpriced. The simplicity and finesse of their food stretch to their drinks as well. Hence, in its relaxed atmosphere, Cafe Weekend constitutes the perfect spot to casually reconvene with friends while enjoying quality food and beverages.
